Health Promotion programs are available to help older adults prevent common health problems, manage chronic conditions, and maintain good health. We work with Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging (WIHA) staff to support successful wellness programming.
One of the programs is Walk With Ease. The Arthritis Foundation's Walk With Ease program is evidence based intervention that has been proven to improve the quality of life of people with arthritis. This program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain. It's also great for individuals that do not have arthritis who want to make walking a regular habit. Based on research and tested programs, Walk With Ease is shown to reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis, increase balance, strength and walking pace, build confidence to be physically active and improve overall health. Participants meet for 1 hour, 3 times a week, for 6 weeks and are guided by a certified leader who provides information, support and the tools need to help participants reach their goals.
Another program we have to offer is Living Well with chronic conditions. It is a high-level evidence based workshop for people who have one or more chronic conditions. Living well meets for 2 & 1/2 hours a week for 6 weeks. It is facilitated by 2 trained leader in a classroom style. A chronic condition is an on-going health problem or disease such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and other long-term problems. Living well benefits include improved general health, fewer days of hospitalization, fewer out-patient health care visits and cost savings of approximately 10:1.
Lastly, there is a program called Strong Bodies. This is a 12 week exercise program for men and women of all ages. Each class includes progressive weight training. People with health concerns such as, arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity and back pain often benefit from an exercise program that involves lifting weights a few times each week. Participants will be provided with adjustable ankle weights, dumbbells and bottled water. Participants will need to bring sturdy shoes and a mat or towel.
